Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure inside the eye. This condition can lead to gradual vision loss if not managed properly, making early diagnosis crucial. The most common type, primary open-angle glaucoma, typically develops slowly without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. Regular eye exams are essential for detecting glaucoma early, as they include tests to measure intraocular pressure, assess the optic nerve, and evaluate the visual field.

Diagnosis of glaucoma involves a comprehensive eye examination. Your eye doctor will measure the pressure inside your eyes using a tonometer, perform a detailed inspection of the optic nerve through a process called ophthalmoscopy, and may conduct visual field tests to detect any peripheral vision loss. In some cases, additional imaging tests like optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be used to get detailed images of the optic nerve and retinal layers to aid in diagnosis.
Treatment for glaucoma aims to lower intraocular pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve. The most common initial treatment is prescription eye drops, which work to either reduce the production of intraocular fluid or improve its drainage. In some cases, oral medications may also be prescribed. If eye drops or medications are not sufficient to control the pressure, surgical options such as laser therapy or traditional surgery might be recommended. These procedures help to improve fluid drainage from the eye and reduce pressure.
Dr Andre offers laser SLT and Iridotomy Surgery in-office to treat glaucoma and in many cases, reduce or eliminate the need for daily glaucoma drops.
Managing glaucoma requires ongoing monitoring and adherence to your prescribed treatment plan. Regular follow-up visits with your eye care professional are essential to track your condition and adjust treatment as necessary. By working closely with your doctor and maintaining your treatment regimen, you can help preserve your vision and manage glaucoma effectively..
Glaucoma can be detected on an optic nerve exam and eye pressure check and treatment started to prevent worsening, even before symptoms appear.
Andre Eye and Optical offers advanced optic nerve OCT imaging to detect and evaluate changes in the eye caused by glaucoma.
